An accident on Route 7 in Clarke County has claimed the life of a Pennsylvania man. The single vehicle accident occurred Monday night as sleet and freezing rain began falling across the area.

According to Sgt. F.L. Tyler of the Virginia State Police, sixty-five year old Thomas E. Swartz of Mountainville PA was driving a 1997 Ford F150 pickup westbound on Route 7. At 9:56 p.m. Swartz lost control of the vehicle, then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a utility pole three tenths of a mile east of Pierce Road (Rt. 635).

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported Swartz to Winchester Medical Center where he later died of his injuries at 11:25 p.m.

Swartz was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Tyler said.

Police determined that weather conditions and speed contributed to the accident and alcohol was not a factor. The incident was investigated   by Trooper J.F. Williams.
