Apple Blossom Festival Announces 2012 Queen

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival President, Tom Scully, has announced that Jazmyn “Jazz” Dorsett has accepted the role of Queen Shenandoah LXXXV-Designate for the 2012 Festival. Jazz Dorsett is the 20-year old daughter of Tony Dorsett, and his lovely wife, Janet, of Dallas, Texas. Tony Dorsett is a sports legend of the highest order, best known for his career at the University of Pittsburgh; and, his long successful involvement with the Dallas Cowboys.

Jazz Dorsett completed her first year of college at Oklahoma State University where she was a member of the women’s basketball team. She is currently in the midst of a transfer year, hoping, in the fall, to continue her athletic career on the women’s basketball team at a new school and, planning to continue her academic studies in marketing and the fashion industry. Jazz is a member of the National Charity League, a mother/daughter volunteer organization; and, she is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside of basketball Jazz says that she enjoys “music, movies, shopping and spending time with her family and friends.”

Best chances for the public to see Queen Shenandoah LXXXV will be at her Coronation at Handley High School at 1:30pm on Friday, May 4th and, when she makes her signature ride on the “Trail of Pink Petals”  at the Grand Feature Parade at 1:30pm, Saturday afternoon, May 5th

“…Jazz Dorsett completed her first year of college at Oklahoma State University where she was a member of the women’s basketball team. She is currently in the midst of a transfer year, hoping, in the fall, to continue her athletic career on the women’s basketball team at a new school …”

In other words, she flunked out.

    • Actually it probably just means she is in the process of transferring to another school. Happens all the time in college basketball.

Player doesn’t like the coach/player doesn’t like the school/player doesn’t like the offense/player isn’t getting enough playing time, etc. Sometimes it is even player not being able to handle the school’s academic requirements, but you have no reason to assume that, do you?

  2. who cares if she flunked out?

  3. Fly on the wall says:

    From the “other” local paper:
“A fashion marketing major, she is living with her family in Dallas for a year and attending Collin County Community College. She was a freshman last year at Oklahoma State University, where she was a member of the women’s basketball team.

She has transferred to the University of Arizona and is spending the year at community college until she becomes eligible to play again.”

RW…while it’s typical that you spout off without thinking, it is also most unfortunate that you would take an innocuous and positive news release and take a negative swipe at someone you don’t know.

    • Right Winger says:

I calls em as I sees em. My baloney meter went off. “Roscoe” and others know all about it.

      • Lonnie Bishop says:

Yessir, we all know about your penchant for spoutin’ off without carin one whit who you insult. What’s unfortunate is that, while you clearly don’t care about the fact that you justn look like those donkeys in that field on Senseny Road, your crass and callous remarks are now there as an insult to a young lady who is lookin forward to spending a few days in the area with her family because she was invited to serve as Queen Shenandoah.

It speaks volumes about you that you find some sort of sick satisfaction teein off on a young lady like that.

  4. Roscoe Evans says:

This young woman’s grade point average is not mentioned in the article, and its a gratuitous insult for a commenter to claim that “she flunked out.” In fact, federal law (FERPA) prohibits schools from releasing a student’s GPA.

I understand the CDN has some sort of comments policy, but it sure needs some refinement if cheap shots like this are permissible.

I can’t think of a legitimate reason for holding Ms. Dorsett up to public ridicule like this. Would you do it if she were a Clarke County girl?

  5. Well Roscoe, One would expect that with the financial resources that she has available perhaps she would go to college and do something with herself.. I would bet good money that she isn’t going to Dartmouth to study pre-med. If she were, She wouldn’t waste her time being Queen of the Apples or whatever her title is

    • Wagonman says:

Well Dave, I believe the “other Paper” stated she was going to a community college for a year in order to be eligible to play basketball. She has a career major in mind. Does she have to go to a Ivy League school to “do something with herself”?? Sounds like you lean to the snob elitist side. Why do you have to demean one of our local festivals?? Lighten up and enjoy.

  6. I’d rather the Queen be a local lady, this Jazz means nothing to me. She’s from Texas, really who cares!

    Go local!

    • Right Winger says:

But then a washed-up athletes’ daughter who has yet to do anything would not get the chance to have a bunch of elitists she’s never met put her on a pedastal!

I like the way you think.

  7. Lonnie Bishop says:

“Washed up” athlete? Hardly. Tony Dorsett is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, at one time held several rushing records, and was part of some great Cowboys fotball teams. Additonally, he shows far more class than you could ever dream to show.
