Clarke Count faced eight teams this Friday & Saturday at the Jefferson Invitational Duals in Ranson West Virginia. The Eagles were the underdogs as the smallest school in the tournament and the only Single A squad, but pulled together with some outstanding individual achievements and rallied as a team several times to go five and three on the weekend.
Day one saw a tough start when the Eagles fell to Susquenita PA 30 – 37, but the boys rallied, shocking Woodgrove 71 – 3 and beating Martinsburg 52 – 24. Day two started in a similar fashion when the Eagles dropped their first match to Sherando 27 – 36, but that quickly changed when they squared off against Warren County. The Eagles came out strong when both Levi Hagerdon and William Wallace pinned their opponents, but Clarke fell behind
until Peter Levi pinned Tristan Ward; Jessie Longerbeam, Johnny Longerbeam, and Logan Withers all found falls to bring the final score to 42 – 37.
The Eagles were down 30 – 33 against West Virginia AAA powerhouse Hedgesville when William Wallace brought the
Eagles another team victory pulling out a pin against Anthony Carter to bring the score to 36 – 33. The Clarke grapplers had a tough match against Pennsylvania’s Conestoga, losing 18 – 41 but set up the final match of the evening against host Jefferson County (WV). Clarke found an early lead until Jefferson put a string of victories together from 170, 182, 195, and 220, bringing the score to 30 – 39 with only two matches to go; both William Wallace and Sean Erisman pinned their opponents to secure another team victory for the CCHS squad 42 – 39.
Clarke’s outstanding wrestler of the weekend would have to be Pete Levi who went 8-0 against some very tough wrestlers from three states.
