The Clarke County Animal Shelter is hosting an Open House Saturday, Dec. 18, from noon to 3 p.m. Visitors will be able to tour the shelter and enjoy cookies, snacks, and beverages. The shelter encourages everyone visiting to bring gifts for dogs and cats at the shelter. The wish list includes everything from dog and cat food, old towels and blankets, pet beds, stainless steel bowls and cleaning supplies. Visitors can also make a financial donation.
The shelter will also be selling its 2011 calendar featuring endearing animal portraits of shelter animals and locally owned pets. The calendar, which also features pet tips, quotes, and handy reference phone numbers, was created by the Clarke County Humane Foundation. The cost is $10. It is also available at Berryville area retailers and veterinary offices. Proceeds from calendar sales go to the Clarke County Humane Foundation, which partners with Clarke County to operate the Clarke County Animal Shelter. The Foundation’s is currently raising funds for construction of a run-in shed for large animals that are temporarily housed at the shelter’s property.
The Humane Foundation works with Clarke County to provide a quality, well-maintained shelter as a resource to pet owners, lost and stray dogs and cats, and as a temporary location for larger animals. Existing through private donations, the Foundation sponsors a yearly rabies clinic, spay and neuter programs, educational opportunities, as well as assisting with ongoing shelter operations.
Volunteers are always welcome at the Clarke County Animal Shelter, 540-955-5104, and the Humane Foundation welcomes donations.
