Clarke County Schools Closed – UPDATE on School Activities

UPDATE – School officials have announced that   all school activities and events that were scheduled for tonight, Friday December 17th, WILL take place as scheduled.   Also, all school activities and events scheduled for Saturday and Saturday Night WILL take place as scheduled.   This means that the Madrigal Dinners scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights are still taking place at the same time and place.

Exam Update:

Due to the snow days, the exam schedule for the high school has been altered again.   Monday, December 20th will be a regular A-Day. The first mid-term exam will begin on Tuesday, December 21st with a B1 and B3 Exam-Day schedule.   A full detailed breakdown of this schedule is available   on the Clarke County DIVISION Website.

Christmas came early this year for Clarke County students as school administrators announced that Clarke County Public Schools are closed, Friday, December 17, 2010. Clarke joined many other school systems around the area that are closed or on delay as crews work to clear roadways. Tacked onto yesterday’s closing, students will have a four day weekend and the cancellation will push more midterm exams off until after Christmas break.

VDOT is warning motorists to be be alert for black ice on roads with bare pavement in the early morning hours.   Drivers are advised to use extreme caution and keep their speeds low when driving on snow and ice.

Here are the road conditions around the state reported by VDOT as of 4:45AM.:

Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions are in Alleghany County.   Minor conditions are in Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions are in Rockbridge and Augusta counties.   Clear conditions are in Rockingham, Frederick and Shenandoah counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions are in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland and Frederick counties.   Minor conditions are in Augusta, Rockingham, Clarke, Page, Warren and Shenandoah counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Warren, Clarke, Page, Frederick and Shenandoah counties.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.   Snow tires or chains are necessary.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.   Snow tires or chains are advisable.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.   Driving with caution is recommended.
