Tuesday March 16th, 27 students competed to determine who would represent our area in the National Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. Braving an onslaught of 23 rounds of competition level words, 12-year-old Samuel Estep stood above the crowd to win the 33rd Annual Regional Spelling Bee held at Daniel Morgan Middle School in Winchester. Samuel is a home-schooled student from Clarke County who won the competition by correctly spelling “dromomania” (drom ·o ·ma ·ni ·a, Noun – An uncontrollable impulse or desire to wander or travel ) beating out the 2009 champion Rosa Gibson. Estep will now advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington on June 2-4. Congratulations Samuel, and good luck at the National Spelling Bee!
