Clarke Kicks-off Memorial Day Weekend

Strawberry Fesitval

Perfect temperatures, clear skies and plenty of things to do and eat gave the 2010 Memorial Day weekend in Berryville Saturday a strong start. Here’s a sample of just a few of the many activities around town yesterday:

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church had a steady flow of visitors beginning at 9:00 am when the yard sale opened. Church members,   Joyce Mason and Loretta Allison, tended the cash register as people took home many “gently used” items including electronics, books and record albums.

“This is our church’s only annual fund raiser,” Mason said. “Every penny that we take in goes to support the church.” Flower and vegetable plants were also available. So many passers-by stopped in for lunch  (feasting on fried chicken, iced tea and homemade ice-cream or strawberry shortcake) that  the Church  sold out of chicken around 12:30 pm  . Rumor has it that some patrons had both ice-cream AND shortcake…

Car Wash

Enthusiastic recruiters holding “Car Wash” signs at the corner of Main Street kept a steady flow of dirty vehicles lined up in front of Broy’s Well Service. Over 20 Clarke County High School band members used car wash soap and elbow grease to transform the vehicles back to their former show-room shine.

Each car was mobbed by a team of bucket-toting, soap-slinging musicians before being rinsed and dried by the shammy-slingers. A noticeable transformation of happier drivers was apparent as clean cars cruised Berryville’s streets.

Soccer Bake Sale

Even more baked delicacies could be had at the CCHS Soccer bake sale table in front of the Bank of Clarke.

Soccer moms and soccer players joined forces to raise money to fund a soccer camp for aspiring superstars. The cookies and cakes sold quickly!

Business as Usual

Most Main Street businesses took advantage of the holiday foot traffic by opening doors and displaying flags. The Clarke County Farmers market was a popular destination. Customers quickly filled downtown parking spots and lots.
