Clarke Maintains Perfect Record While Romping the Dukes

After what seemed to be an unending drive for most Clarke County spectators, they were rewarded with a great showing by the Clarke County Eagles as they trounced the Cumberland Dukes 42-0. Grant Shaw ended a monstrous night with five touchdowns and two, two-point conversion tries for nearly 300 all-purpose yards. The quarterback Drew Paice scored the only other Eagles Touchdown of the night.

Once again the defense played a huge role in preserving the shutout. The Cumberland Dukes were able to get into the Clarke red zone only once all night with the defense yielding no points. The defense forced multiple turnovers throughout the game.

It was an extremely rough homecoming for the undersized, overmatched, yet spirited Dukes. The Eagles scored 28 easy points by the end of the first half, and as of the second half they were not quite finished. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Grant Shaw scampered 62 yards for his fourth score of the game. This knockout of a drive lasted only 18 seconds.

It was commendable to see such a large turnout of Eagles supporters to a game that took more than three hours to get to for many people. This upcoming week is an off week, but the Eagles will be back to action the following week at George Mason. Come on out and support your second ranked in the state, undefeated Eagles.

    Congrats to the Eagles!!

A tip of the hat to Carl for heads-up concerning the 2nd place ranking. I’m assuming that he is referring to the power rankings, which are based on strength of schedule and opponents’ records. So for the data wonks out there, here is your raw material, coutesy of the VHSL.

It does not include this weekend’s games, and the power ratings for each class are not disaggregated into a top-ten type list. Have fun. 🙂

Oh yeah, it’s a 32 page .pdf; you’ll find Clarke/Bull Run District on page 25.

      • Thanks, Don. I was just telling my husband the data was difficult to locate on the VHSL site and before you know it, you led me right to the page! The Maxpreps-Freeman ranking still has Clarke at 9th, but they aren’t updated until Tuesdays.
