Update- I-81 Lanes Open After Crash Closes Southbound Lanes in Shenandoah County

Update – (2:30 p.m.) Both lanes are now open on Interstate 81 at mile marker 279. The southbound lanes were closed earlier today due to a vehicle crash. Motorists should drive with caution and expect delays in this area with backups reaching three miles.

STAUNTON – (1:35 p.m.) Backups equaling approximately six miles on Interstate 81 southbound at mile marker 279 are occurring due to a vehicle crash. This location is at exit 279 at Route 185 in the Edinburg area.   Both southbound lanes are closed at the crash site. Traffic is being detoured off I-81 at exit 279 and re-entering I-81 at the mile marker 279 ramp.

No estimate for reopening the lanes has been provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton Traffic Operations Center.

Motorists should drive with caution and expect delays in this area.
