Fire and emergency crews from Clarke and Frederick County were called to the scene of a fire in the baling room at Berryville Graphics at approx 9:00 PM Saturday night. Security personnel at the location reported that the fire had been extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews, however they requested assistance to ensure the fire was completely out.
Smoke had filled the structure so crews worked to clear it with exhaust fans to determine whether there was still an active fire. They also used thermal imaging sensors to inspect duct work to ensure that the fire had not spread.
Upon closer inspection crews did discover an active fire inside the baling machine which was quickly extinguished.
There were no injuries reported on the scene.
Berryville Graphics produces nearly 120 million books each year at its manufacturing facility in Berryville, VA. Waste paper from the operation is processed in their 5,700 square-foot baler room where it is compacted and compressed into bales before it is recycled.
