The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee ended months of speculation yesterday with a simple tweet form his Twitter account, “I’m running!” The announcement included a link to Kaine’s first campaign commercial touting his record in Virginia politics when he served as governor. Speculation that Kaine would run began circulating soon after current Democratic Senator Jim Webb announced he would not seek a second term. Prior to announcing his candidacy Kaine also resigned as chairman of the DNC.
The announcement sets the stage for what may be one of the most hotly contested races in 2012. Republican former senator George Allen has already launched his campaign to regain the Senate seat, and tea party leader Jamie Radtke is also seeking the GOP nomination.
