Apple Valley Baptist Church at D.G. Cooley Elementary School
Dr. Barrett Duke, Vice President for Public Policy and Research and Director of the Research Institute of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention will be the guest speaker in the Sunday worship service, July 3, at Apple Valley Baptist Church.
According to the ERLC website, Duke “directs the work of the ERLC’s advocacy arm in Washington, DC. In this capacity he communicates Southern Baptist convictions to elected and public officials in order to influence the development of sound public policy. As Director of the Commission’s Research Institute, Duke oversees the Commission’s research and the collection of information on the pressing moral and religious liberty issues of the day.”
Before coming to Washington, Duke served as the founding pastor to Cornerstone Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado. Under his leadership, the church grew from 13 to over 200 in attendance and launched plans for a multi-phase building project. His successful pastorate is noteworthy for a Southern Baptist church outside of the traditional Bible Belt.
“Dr. Duke is a great example of our Southern Baptist leadership,” said the Rev. Van Welton, Senior Pastor of Apple Valley Baptist. “He is a gifted intellectual with a love and understanding of the local church,” Welton continued. Duke’s appearance highlights the convention’s devotion to the local church, no matter what size.
Apple Valley is part of a new emphasis by Southern Baptists to impact their communities by planting new churches. Each new church is challenged to break from the molds of methodological apathy that characterize so many existing churches and share the love of Jesus with its neighbors through a direct, innovative and relevant presentation of the Gospel. Welton likes to describe his church as “theologically conservative with cutting edge technology.”
Apple Valley’s worship service begins at 10:00 am and is held at D.G. Cooley Elementary School in Berryville. The service is open to all free of charge.
