Grand Home Furnishings of Winchester, Virginia is donating new furniture to the Laurel Center. Grand will provide two loveseats, a wing chair and two accent chests. In addition, Grand employees painted the Laurel Center’s living room and plan to volunteer additional time to help with future needs.
The Laurel Center, formerly the Shelter for Abused Women, empowers and supports victims of domestic violence in Winchester, Frederick County and Clarke County by providing emergency housing, advocacy, support services, and education.
Grand’s gesture is an effort to provide the community with 100 “grand gestures” on behalf of the Grand Happiness Foundation and Grand’s 100th anniversary. As Grand employees sought to identify donations and service projects that might serve as “grand gestures” several employees suggested the Laurel Center as a worthy cause. Grand’s office manager, Kim Stroop, then decided to research the domestic violence shelter, which serves Winchester, Frederick County and Clarke County.
Imagine her Stroop’s surprise when a salesperson came to her to say that someone from the Laurel Center was in the store, looking at furniture.
“This was meant to be,” Stroop said. “I met Jessica, and spent two days at The Laurel Center going through their needs. I wish we could do more for them; they have so many.”
Jessica Carper, a domestic violence prevention coordinator at The Laurel Center, explained what brought her to Grand: “We had some grant money to spend on furniture, and Grand was close and well-known in the community.”
Carper added that it’s very unusual for non-profit organizations to get grant dollars for facility improvements, so she was thrilled to combine the grant and Grand. “When people come in, we want them to feel at home, not have to sit on an old couch with a blanket over it,” she said. “It’s very difficult to find money for those comforts. We need money for birth certificates, clothes for work, cab rides. Those things are much more important. We really, really appreciate everything Grand’s doing for us. These are needs that would not have been met otherwise.”
The Grand Happiness Foundation was founded based on Grand Home Furnishings’ century-old belief that happiness begins in the home. The foundation’s mission is to bring happiness and hope to those in need, specifically focused on the safety, health and education of women and children in our community.
