Clarke County Public Schools has announced the appointment of Mr. Griff Carmichael as the new principal of Cooley Elementary School, effective July 1, 2011.

Mr. Carmichael has been an employee of the Clarke County Public Schools since 2001 and has served in a variety of capacities, most recently as an assistant principal at Cooley Elementary School. Mr. Carmichael lives in the Clarke community.

Upon learning of the announcement late last night, Mr. Carmichael shared the following:

“I am excited about the opportunity to assume a new leadership role with the Cooley and Berryville Primary community. Over the past few years we have cultivated an exceptional educational environment allowing students to seamlessly transfer between the Primary and Cooley campuses. We will continue to improve and build upon our successes as we prepare our students to make the transition to our new educational complex in the near future. I would like to thank the staff of both campuses, the families of our students, and members of the community for their ongoing support. The Berryville Primary and Cooley communities have wonderful students, families, and staff to work with and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall!”

Superintendent of Schools, Michael F. Murphy, spoke highly of Mr. Carmichael’s “commitment to the children of Clarke County and his service to public education”. Murphy said that the selection process was rigorous, thorough, and had a high level of staff participation.

In the eyes of a principle,
    The unsuspecting critical,
Had better know the truth of wrong from right,
‘Cause the eyes of a principle are upon you,
Any wrong you do, he’s gonna see,
When you’re in Cooley, look behind you,
‘Cause that’s where the principle gonna be.

Good gravy. I hope you’re not a Cooley kid! It’s principal….as in “your Principal is your PAL”.
      Good luck Griff!

This is great news. Congratulations. Mr. Carmichael.

    • Well…it’s news. Given his career path in CCPS, here’s hoping it pans out, as he’s got big shoes to fill.

Finally, Clarke does it right!!!! Our family wants to wish Mr. Carmichael the best of luck. We have seen the huge impact he has already given the students at Cooley, and I am certain he will only better our school wide community. For those of you who make judgments on the size of shoes he needs to fill, you must know he has been wearing THOSE SAME SHOES for 2 years or more already! He steps in where needed, whether its on the playground or in the classroom, It’s sad that people in our community have such quick negative remarks. We should be working together not making predictions on people who dedicate their lives to OUR CHILDREN. Mr. Carmichael, thank you for continuing to do ALL that you do. In my family’s eyes- the only thing changing is his salary. We know he will continue to make our elementary school students shine! Way to go Mr. Carmichael!

  6. Hmmm... says:

Well…we’ll see. It’s got nothing to do with passing a quick negative remark or judgment. Perhaps he’s found his niche…

  7. Disagree. There is more mentoring needed, in my opinion.
