The 64th birthday of the modern United States Air Force will be celebrated at Clarke County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9760 during an open house on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 11:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M.
Organized as the United States Army Air Force during World War II, the United States Air Force was brought into being on September 18, 1947 by a few strokes of a pen when President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947. The change to a separate, independent service branch recognized the need for increased air power for the defense of the country. Since then, it has served with great distinction during the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and in many other places throughout the world.
Everyone, and particularly veterans of the Air Force, the former USAAF, as well as other service branches are welcome to Post 9760 throughout the day. An “official” recognition celebratory cake-cutting and remarks will be observed from 4;00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. The guest of honor will be Mr. Thomas Gilpin, grandson of Major General William “Billy” Mitchell, who is known as the father of modern air warfare. Historical items, memorabilia and pictures will be displayed and perhaps a few “on my word of honor” true stores will be exchanged. Those wishing to display a suitable item of interest are urged to contact the person named below. A light fare will be offered with a cash bar. Come and join us! Birthdays of the other military services will also be celebrated at the appropriate times.
