Heavy Snow Blankets Clarke County

A major winter storm now moving away from our area has left over 10 inches of snow across Clarke County, Virginia. Nearly 1,200 county residents are without power this morning. Clarke County Public Schools are closed.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) had restored power to most of Berryville by 10:00pm EST last night after lights went out across much of the town’s western section earlier in the evening. However, overnight an additional 1,184 county residents lost power and remain without electricity as of this morning. REC is also reporting 96 of its 280 Boyce members are without power this morning. Snowfall totals are still preliminary however National Weather Service storm spotters are reporting nearly a foot of snow across northern and western sections of Loudoun County, Virginia. Lucketts is reporting 12.5 inches of new snow with 11 inches reported in Bluemont.

Snowfall on the Blue Ridge just north of Mount Weather totaled 10.5 inches while Berryvile totals are reported at 10 inches. (See storm totals below.)

At the peak of the storm’s precipitation output snow was falling at nearly two inches per hour. Thunder was reported by weather observers on the Blue Ridge during the early afternoon.

Clarke County Public Schools are closed today. According to the CCPS website, all 220, 240 and 247 day employees should wait for instructions regarding schedules for Thursday. CCPS plans to contact employees at approximately 8:00 a.m. in consideration of a 10:00 a.m. or later start.    All custodians should wait for instructions as to when to report to work.

Travel conditions will remain treacherous throughout the day as temperatures are not predicted to get above freezing and slowing progress as VDOT crews work to clear roads. Winds gusts of 25 mph were recorded overnight and are forecast to continue today adding drifting snow to the difficulties for drivers.

There is a possibility for additional snowfall tonight and tomorrow.
