Band Director Mark Curry couldn’t remember the last time the band won at states. He says it had to be more than 15 years ago. Drum Major Katie Barnhill says that she sure doesn’t remember seeing any of the state championship banners anywhere in the band room.

The announcement was greeted with cheers from the stands filled with band members and their parents. As the awards ceremony came to a close and Clarke County High School’s representatives walked off the field, band members in the stands broke into a spontaneous chant of “I love marching band.”

The state championship concludes the band’s 2011 season.

The Clarke County High School Screamin’ Eagle Marching Band 2011 program was “ConstruXion” written by Dr. Ryan Keebaugh. In the show, Emma the Architect is on a quest to design a brand new school. The construction crew, led by the band’s foremen, took viewers on a journey through Emma’s experiments with shapes and forms as she works toward a solution.

The band is under the direction of Mark Curry and Greg Abell.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Clarke County Marching Band and Guard for their Championship win at yesterday’s VA State Competition. The Band’s ConstruXion show was amazing, and their first place was so well deserved. They also won Best Overall Effect, Best Music, and Best Color Guard, and their points total was the best this season – wow!! It was great to be there to watch them perform, and to share in their joy as they won the State Championship award.

Many thanks go to Mr. Curry, Mr. Abell and Mrs. McKenney for their tireless dedication to our Marching Band and Guard. Their hard work and commitment to the students has created a stellar group of performers.

Thank you Marching Band and Guard for a truly fantastic marching season; I have found it inspiring to watch your show develop each week – all the way from Band Camp to VA State Champions – what a journey!!

  9. Fly on the wall says:

[redacted] As shown by the quote below, even your beloved Mr. Curry is unaware of the last time Clarke won at states…if at all. No need to be snarky towards someone. If you know the year, by all means enlighten us all.

“Band Director Mark Curry couldn’t remember the last time the band won at states. He says it had to be more than 15 years ago. Drum Major Katie Barnhill says that she sure doesn’t remember seeing any of the state championship banners anywhere in the band room.”

  10. Sr. Mellophone says:

To Mr. Broy please do not take offence to the Comment posted above by “CC Native” he does not speak for the Band or the Senior Class.

So from Myself and All the Seniors, Thank you for the complement!

  11. Aly Kerby says:

I’m proud to be a part of this band. We all worked very hard to make this happen, especially Mr. Curry, Mr. Abell, and Ms. Stephanie. Thanks for all the compliments!

  12. Right Winger says:

Looks like they’re going to need a bigger trophy case!!

  13. April O'Leary says:

Way to go CCHS Band!!! All the sore muscles, endless playing, loading and unloading everything, as well as tireless marching definitely paid off!!! What a great group of young adults we have to represent the musical side of Clarke!!

  14. @ Fly on the Wall, that’s because titles aren’t the only thing we work for.

    • Fly on the wall says:

“Jane,” my post, part of which was redacted, was in response to a rather flippant post by “CC Native,” who passed himself off as a senior and band member and lamely tried to diss Mr. Broy. CDN eliminated CC Native’s initial post, thus making mine stand out as a trite retort to the initial article…my post was not meant for that, in the least.

  15. I was at the friday evening high school football game and enjoyed the marvelous half time show. Bravo to the band and color guard. Mark Curry was excellent in directing the band and parent supporters such as Jane Boyles, Mr. Kerby and others do a lot . Congratulations to the dedicated, hard working students who performed well as a team. (TEAM Together Each Accomplishes More)

  16. a job well done!!!

  17. Shaun Broy says:

I don’t let stuff like that bother me… YOUR SUCCESS IS WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT!!!! I actually was a CCHS band member, drum major in fact… I also served on the small search committee after I had graduated that selected Mr. Curry to be the Director. Good choice indeed!!

Again… BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am proud of YOU ALL and even prouder to be an EAGLE!!! 🙂
