The Mosby Heritage Area Association is pleased to sponsor this event at Historic Avenel in Fauquier County. The historical significance of this home, its occupants and the history surrounding the Civil War is a page out of our nation’s history. We would appreciate your efforts to put this into your newspapers. Attached is a watercolor sketch of Avenel which you may use.
Date: Sunday, June 24, 2012
Time: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
5722 John Marshal Highway
The Plains, VA 20198
Description: Enjoy a casual afternoon at Avenel, the overnight stop of General Robert E. Lee at his cousin’s house on his way to the Second Battle of Manassas. Join us for an afternoon of wine and cheese while listening to the story of the Beverley and Dulany family’s eye-witness to history through the diary of Ida Dulany, In the Shadow of the Enemy, and Beverley Family memoires. Hear from the women left on the home front stories of their experiences and how their lives were disrupted by the American Civil War. Walk where General Stonewall Jackson marched his men across the Avenel property in the sight of Thoroughfare Gap.
We have the very special opportunity of visiting Avenel through the gracious and generous help of the owner, Georgia Herbert.
Copies of the Dulany diary will be available for purchase. Editors of the diary will also be on hand to talk to participants and sign the book.
Admission: MHAA members $65, non-MHAA members $75
