Obituary for Bettie C. Devine

Bettie Clark Devine, 79, of Berryville, Virginia, died Sunday, May 1, 2011 at her residence.

Mrs. Devine was born January 1, 1932 in Berryville, Virginia, the daughter of James Henry and Catherine Ryan Mallory Clark.

After raising her family she had served as Executive Director of the Clarke County Red Cross. She was a member of Berryville Presbyterian Church and the Blue Ridge Democratic Women Committee. She loved animals and was an avid bird watcher.

She married James Paul Devine, Jr. on January 15, 1953 in Berryville, Virginia. Mr. Devine died on October 25, 2005.

Surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Lynne Fanning Apat of Daytona Beach, FL and Katherine Kester Devine of Hampshire County, WV; two grandsons, Matthew Douglas Fanning and Jeffrey Ryan Fanning; and a great granddaughter, Alea Renee Marco.

Two sisters, Jean Grebeleski and Reba “Susy” Bell preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P. M. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Berryville Presbyterian Church, Berryville with Rev. Jonathan W. Bunker officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 P. M. Wednesday evening at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

    I was perhaps 13 or 14, and Jim and Bettie Devine invited me and Joey Dove to ride along with them and Kathy as they were driving to DC on a Saturday to see a Professional Tennis Tournament.
    We had a great time!
    Still recall Jim’s sense of humor and Bettie’s infectious laughter.
    Thanks to Jim and Bettie for a great childhood memory!
