Our hero and patriarch, George Richard Tyler of Boyce, Virginia, passed away on April 26, 2011. Born June 27, 1928 in Amherst, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Frank Tyler and Elizabeth Adams Tyler. His distinguished career in the U.S. Army was followed by a second career as a satellite communications engineer for Bendix and GE before retiring to New Bern, NC. Following the death of his loving wife, Alma D. Tyler, in 2006, he relocated to Boyce, Virginia, to be near his large and adoring family and enjoy his favorite pursuits of golf and gardening and sharing his life-long passion as a fan of the Boston Red Sox.
A devoted husband and loving and cherished father, he is survived by his six children: Jane Tyler Cushman of Arlington, Virginia; Sharon P. Young (Alan) of Boyce, Virginia; George R. Tyler, Jr., of New Bern, NC; Robert A. Tyler of Boyce, VA; Terri Lee Merz (Thomas) of Centreville, Virginia; and Timothy W. Tyler (Connie) of Boyce, VA; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister Grace Zebert and sister-in-law Dorothy Hopkins; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Boyce Baptist Church, 1 Main Street, Boyce, VA. A memorial service and inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boyce Volunteer Fire Dept., 7 S. Greenway Ave., Boyce, VA 22620.
