Obituary for Henrietta Gittings Renshaw Whiting

Henrietta Gittings Renshaw Whiting, 89, of Berryville, VA died peacefully on Tuesday, January 25, 2011.   She was born in Snow Hill, Maryland on February 10, 1921.   She was the daughter of the late Robert (Pat) Henry Renshaw and the late Henrietta Albert Renshaw, long-time residents of Berryville. Her father grew up in Annfield and New Market.

Mrs. Whiting is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Beverley Whiting who were married in September 1970, a loving second marriage for both of them that spanned more than forty years.

Mrs. Whiting is survived also by her six children:   Carolynne Shumate (and her husband, Roland) of Lakewood Ranch, FL, Marianne Warmer of Coronado, CA, Daniel P. Card, II (and his wife, LouAnn) of St. Louis, MO, Rita Bourgeois (and her husband, Mike Gerkin) of Tucson, AZ, Rosa Whiting of Bradenton, FL and Samuel P. Card, Jr., of Berryville, VA. Mrs. Whiting is survived by her step-daughter, Sally Tomblin of Winchester, VA and her daughter-in-law, Judy Whiting of Stephens City, VA. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Beverly Sherry of Winchester, VA and her stepson, William H. Whiting of Markham, VA. Mrs. Whiting has many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.   Mrs. Whiting was preceded in death by her sister, Mary (Polly) Leonard of Baltimore, MD and her brothers, Robert Taylor of Westminster, MD and Taylor Renshaw of Salisbury, MD.

Mrs. Whiting attended The Bryn Mawr and Western High Schools in Baltimore as well as Bard Aron Secretarial School. She made her debut at the Baltimore Bachelor’s Cotillion. She was a long term member of the Jr. League in Texas and Maryland. She was a 50 year member of Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville and long time member of the choir.   She worked as a secretary for Ashworth Brothers in Winchester and was the most-beloved “Ice-Cream” Lady at Cooley Elementary in Berryville for many years.   She was a long-term member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Berryville Women’s Club.

A funeral service will be 11:00 A. M. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church, 110 N. Church St., Berryville, VA 22611 with The Rev. Michael Mohns officiating. The service will be followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall, next to the Church.

Friends will be received 6:00 – 8: 00 P. M. Friday evening at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, 1050 W. Main St. Berryville.

A private burial will be held at Old Chapel Cemetery with family members prior to the funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Organ Fund, Grace Episcopal Church, 110 N. Church St., Berryville, VA, 22611.

    Henry was such a joy. She and Bev are our neighbors and welcomed us to the neighborhood with open arms when we moved here. She had such a warm personality and was a friend to all. The eulogy at her service today reflected on Henry’s life and was written so well. My condolences to Bev, Sammy and all of her kids, grandkids and friends.

    She (and her brownies!) will be missed!
