Jerald Murry Peterson, 70, passed away on December 18, 2009 at his home in Bluemont, VA. He was born on May 22, 1939 in Richfield, Utah, son of Murry Peterson and Della King Peterson. He married Stephanie Brewster of Salt Lake City in 1960 and was later divorced.
Jerald graduated from Richfield High School, class of 1957. He served in the National Guard and Army reserves. Jerald received a scholarship in engineering from Utah State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1962.
Jerald’s career included work for the National Heart Institute, Polytechnic Engineering Company and Scope, Inc. as well more than 30 years service for the US Government working for the Naval Oceanographic Office, National Oceanographic Institute Center and NOAA as an electronics engineer, digital design engineer and oceanographer. In 1994, Jerald received the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award for Development of Portable Digital Water-Level Measurement System.
Jerald loved to learn and was perpetually enrolled in graduate-level college courses during his life. Locals in his town affectionately called him “Dr. Peterson”. His diverse interests included ham radio, electronics, oceanography, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, foreign languages, photography, neurochemistry, scuba diving, and gunology. He was a lifetime member of and an instructor for the NRA.
He will be missed by his daughter, Kristin (Mark) Hebert of Miami, FL; granddaughter, Amanda (James) Rickey of New York, NY; sister, Lorraine (Neal) Streetman of Castle Rock, CO; brothers, Gaylon (Linda) Peterson of Salt Lake City, UT, Randy (Connie) Peterson of Blythe, CA, and Brad (Cindy) Peterson of West Jordan, UT; longtime friend (former girlfriend) Larissa Borst of Hamilton, VA; her children, Ann (Rob) Huggins-Lawler of Round Hill, VA, Lisa Lipscomb of Hamilton, VA, Mark (April) Lipscomb of Berryville, VA, and her grandsons, Albert, Louis, Devin and Wyatt.
Jerald was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Dan Peterson, father, Murry C. Peterson and mother, Della King Peterson Washburn.
A Life Celebration will be held for his family and friends at his home in the Zen Garden at 11 am on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
