John Elphinstone McIntosh of “Daviot”, Boyce, Virginia, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, August 25, 2010, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury. He was born on August 7, 1929, in Norfolk, Virginia, the only child of Elizabeth Nicholas Moore and Charles Fleming McIntosh.
Mr. McIntosh returned to Berryville with his Mother following his father’s death in 1933. He attended Episcopal High School, St. James High School and The University of Virginia. He served in the Marine Corps near the end of the Korean War.
On February 3, 1951, Mr. McIntosh married Ann Witt Averett, from Lynchburg, VA, and after his service with the Marine Corps, they moved back to Clarke County to start their family.
He worked as a District Manager for Economy Forms Corporation. After his retirement from Economy Forms, he managed investments for Merrill Lynch.
Mr. McIntosh served on the Vestry at Christ Church in Millwood, Virginia; he was a past president of Grafton School; a past Chairman of the Clarke County Democratic Committee and he served on the Horseman’s Benevolence & Protective Association (HBPA) in Charlestown, WV.
Mr. McIntosh enjoyed foxhunting, horse racing, flying, scuba diving, golf, tennis and reading. He loved animals and was especially fond of his pet dogs, cats, his horse, “Harry”, and all of the birds and squirrels on the farm.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Sara M. Stern, and her husband, Sidney; three sons, John E. (Jock) McIntosh, Jr. and his wife, Eileen; Charles F. McIntosh and his wife, Alexandra (Sandra); William A. (Bill) McIntosh and his wife Anne; eight grandchildren: Henry, Averett, John, Sara, Nina, Kirk, Annie and Elizabeth.
His family joins in thanking all of Mr. McIntosh’s wonderful caretakers at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury and Blue Ridge Hospice.
A private graveside service will be held at Old Chapel Cemetery in Millwood, VA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28, at 11 AM at Christ Church in Millwood, VA, with The Rev. Ann Manson officiating. A reception will follow.
