Mary Estelle Duke McFillen, 95, of Berryville, Virginia, died peacefully Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Blue Ridge Hospice Center in Winchester, VA.
Estelle was born in Clarke County, Virginia on August 1, 1915 – the daughter of the late John I. Duke and Esther V. Duke Crim. She married Smith Robert McFillen on November 10, 1934. Throughout their forty-four year marriage, they were blessed with two children, the late R. Leon McFillen and Thomas W. McFillen.
Estelle, the second of nine brothers and sisters, was a dedicated homemaker, loving mother, and a passionate caregiver that contributed to the raising of many families during her long and fruitful life. She was part of a close knit production team for many decades while employed at Smalley Packaging, finally retiring in 1986. She was the last surviving charter member of the VFW Post 9760 Ladies’ Auxiliary. Estelle was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Her immediate survivors include: son Tom & wife, Robin of Berryville; 5 grandchildren – Megan, Mary Grace, Margaret & Molly McFillen of Berryville and Terre McFillen Hall & husband, Steve of Ashburn, VA; a great granddaughter, Sarah Patricia Hall; her daughter-in-law, Patsy Whetzel McFillen of McLean; and, two brothers, H. B. (Ben) Crim & wife, Freida and Bobby L. Crim & wife, Sue – all of Winchester, VA.
A memorial service will be held at 4 o’clock on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church, Berryville, with The Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Blue Ridge Hospice, General Inpatient Fund (333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA. 22601).
