Obituary for Nell W. Reath

Nell W. Reath, age 88, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 14th in her room at Cathedral Village in Philadelphia.   She had lived at Cathedral Village since 2002, after living for nearly 60 years in Chestnut Hill.

She was born Nell Baskerville Williams in 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA.   Her parents, James Peter & Virginia Carrington Williams, were Virginians, and her family’s farm, Riverside, near Berryville, VA was the childhood summer home she most lovingly remembered.

She was educated at The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, and later at Chatham Hall in Chatham, VA.   In 1943 she married the late Henry Thompson Reath, and with him raised their five children, all of whom survive her:   Robin Reath Graves (and Sidney Graves) of Newburyport, MA; Henry T. Reath, Jr. (and Mary Reath) of Princeton, NJ; Ellen W. Reath (and Craig Maginness) of Denver, CO; Virginia C. Reath of New York, NY; and Anne P. Reath (and James Boyd) also of New York City.   In Chestnut Hill and at her summer home in Northeast Harbor, ME, she devoted her life to the love and care of her family.   At the time of her death, in addition to her children and their spouses, she had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as Moonie.   Outside of her devotion to her family she gave generously of her time and was equally rewarded by her involvement with St. Paul’s Church, The Philadelphia Garden Club, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, and Education for Parenting, where she served as Chair of the Board.

In mid-September there will be a family service at her gravesite in Northeast Harbor, where she will be buried next to her late husband.   On September 25th a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Church in Chestnut Hill.   In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution in her name to the Schuylkill Center at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128.   (www.schuylkillcenter.org)
