Wesley Browning Shaffer passed away Friday, August 24, 2012, at home, surrounded by his family.
Wes was born May 11, 1933, in Winchester, VA, the son of the late Wesley Browning Shaffer and Julia Adams Shaffer. He was a lifelong resident of Berryville, VA.
He married Mary “Nancy” McDaniel on August 27, 1953, in Martinsburg, WV, and they had four children. Wes was active in his local community, serving in any capacity that would enrich the lives of his children: he was co-founder, commissioner and coach of Clarke County Little League football; assistant Boy Scouts pack cubmaster; coach of Little League Baseball; member of the Clarke County Recreation Council and of many other organizations. He served on the Berryville Planning Commission from the late-1990s until 2012.
Wes retired as Traffic and Distribution Manager after 41 years of service with Berryville Graphics, the former Doubleday & Co., which hired Wes as one of its first employees in 1956. He also retired as Command Sergeant Major with the Army National Guard after more than 40 years of service. He has owned and operated the Racquet Corner Pro Shop since 1974. Wes had been the guitarist for the local band Apple Jacks and bass player for Moving Country.
He is survived by his cherished wife Nancy; four adoring children—Wesley Browning Shaffer III and wife, Dixie; Robin Hottle and husband Larry; Douglas Allen Shaffer and fiancée Julie Mauck; and Tracy Royston and husband Tony; and six loving grandchildren—Marigrace Rosenberry, Megan Robinson, William B. Rosenberry IV, Elizabeth Shaffer, Julia Shaffer, and Holland “Holly” Robinson; as well as treasured nieces and nephews.
Wes was preceded in death by his brother Allen and two sisters, Lula Shaffer Hartman of Hampton, VA and Betty Shaffer Henry of Winchester.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, officiated by The Reverend Canon Dwight L. Brown of Grace Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, WV with full military honors provided by the Clarke County Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be William Pifer, Sr., William B. Rosenberry IV, Monty Hartman, Ronnie Phelps, Jerry Milhon, Tony Royston, Larry Lloyd and Skip Royston.
The family will receive friends 7:00 – 9:00 P. M. Monday evening at the funeral home.
