Piedmont Symphony Orchestra Announces Expansion of Young Artist Competition

The Piedmont Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Glenn Quader has announced an expansion of the residency requirements for its Young Artist Competition. This competition is now open to student instrumentalists (piano, strings, winds, or percussion) under the age of 19 as of February 19, 2012 and a resident of one of the following Virginia counties:   Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, Prince William, Rappahannock, Stafford, Spotsylvania, or Warren (or independent cities within those counties).   The first place winner will receive a $1,500.00 scholarship prize, second place will receive $750.00 and third prize will receive $500.00.

This competition is unusual in that the top three finalists will rehearse their repertoire with the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra and will perform their selection for solo instrument and orchestra with the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra at its February 19, 2012 concert at Highland School’s Center for the Arts, located in Warrenton, Virginia. A panel of judges will evaluate the finalists at the concert and award first, second, and third place prizes.

To participate, each applicant must submit a high quality CD of their solo by October 18, 2011.   For more details about the application process and to receive an application please go to www.piedmontsymphony.org or contact Debbie Gilbert at 540-347-5761.
