The Powhatan School Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Susan C. Scarborough as the new Head of School effective July 1, 2011.
The Board’s unanimous decision to select Sue followed a strong recommendation from the school’s Search committee who expressed confidence that Scarborough will bring a significant amount of academic experience to Powhatan School.
Scarborough currently serves as Director of the Lower School at Buckingham Brown & Nichols School, a premier co-educational day school located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. BB&N was founded in 1883 and educates more than 950 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Scarborough’s current role at BB&N includes overseeing a nine-building campus, supporting and cultivating a faculty of fifty-five, and fostering parent relations and student life. Scarborough’s demonstrated interpersonal skills and an open leadership style at BB&N played an important role in her selection according to Powhatan School Trustee Chairman Janet marsh.
“Sue’s passionate commitment to students and teachers and her interest in early childhood education will be valuable assets in Powhatan’s ongoing commitment to excellence and continuing the fine tradition as the pre-eminent independent school in our region” Marsh said. “Sue is an extraordinarily experienced, visionary leader, Sue is a gifted administrator who possesses strong financial and analytical skills and appreciates the need to preserve the financial and programmatic sustainability of our school, while leading the development efforts which are so vital to maintaining our mission. We are confident she will live, lead, and embody the school’s core principles embodied in its mission while leading the school into a 21″ century environment.”
Scarborough ‘s appointment concludes an extensive national search headed by Richie Wilkins, a Powhatan school parent and, Board Member assisted by Dr. Richard Jung of Education Access Strategies, LLC, Bethesda, MD. The Search Committee was composed of six current members of the Board of Trustees, and was assisted by an Advisory Committee composed of sixteen members of the Powhatan community, including alumni, parents, faculty, administrators and members of the Associate Board of Trustees. Powhatan School, incorporated in 1948, is a fully accredited, non-sectarian, co-educational day school located in Clarke County, Virginia. Powhatan School provides a broad educational program for students with average to superior academic potential in kindergarten through eighth grade. Powhatan currently has an enrollment of 235 students and an annual operating budget of $3.2 million.
