The Cat will be back for his 54th Birthday!

The Apple Blossom Mall Simon Kidgits Club and the Frederick County Education Association invite you to bring your children to the fourteenth annual Read Across America Book Blast at Apple Blossom Mall on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 from 5:30—7:30 PM.  Our Frederick County teachers will read to the children from 5:30—7:30.  Other invited guests from the community, including Jim Stutzman and storytellers Mackenzie Vanover and Donna Hughes, will also be there.  Mackenzie Vanover will tell one of her interesting stories at 7:00 PM on March 1st and Donna Hughes will present her stories at 6:00 PM.

We will be including the Paws for Reading in our celebration this year.  Paws for Reading is a program designed to get children excited about reading and to help them build fluency.  Children reading to dogs began in Colorado about 10 years ago and has spread rapidly across the country.  Dogs make great listeners.  They never judge the reader; they just curl up and listen.  There is a growing body of research that children who participate in a regularly program of reading to dogs do better on reading assessments.  All of the dogs are certified therapy dogs through Therapy Dogs International (TDI).  They passed tests of obedience and temperament in order to earn certification and each year they must submit vet records showing they are up to date on shots and health tests.  Children coming to our celebration may bring a book to read to the dogs on March 1st from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.

The Cat-in-the-Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two, will be there to greet children. Each child may exchange a book and will be given a free book, while supplies last.  There will be activities, stickers, and refreshments for all.  So come out on Tuesday, March 1st, and join with Cat-in-the-Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two in the enjoyment of reading.
