REC Urges Members to Prepare For Hurricanes Before They Happen

High winds and heavy rains from hurricanes can wreak havoc on electric lines and utility poles. That is why Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) prepares for hurricanes before they develop. With Hurricane Irene forecasted to make landfall along the East Coast this coming weekend, REC members are encouraged to prepare for the possibility of power outages if the storm should affect our area.

Billy Carter, REC’s director of operational and construction services said, “REC is prepared for any affects our area may experience from Hurricane Irene. If outages do occur, we will work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. With the safety of our members and employees our primary focus, we ask everyone to be patient during restoration efforts.”

For frequent updates of REC’s power restoration status during major storm or outage situations, tune in to local radio stations or visit REC’s Outage Center at To report an outage, please call 800-552-3904, or make the report online on REC’s website. Members who rely on a smart phone, can access outage information and report an outage through the Cooperative’s mobile website

Maxie Rozell, REC’s director of safety and security says, “Being without power is always an inconvenience. Being prepared, however, can make the situation a little less uncomfortable. REC recommends you prepare as if you were going on a camping trip and create an outage preparedness kit.”
