Vandals targeted the historic Wickliffe Episcopal Church in Clarke County last week leaving behind racial slurs and anti-Semitic graffiti. According to Clarke County Chief Deputy Michael McWilliams, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office received an early morning call on March 5, 2011 reporting the incident. Vandal(s) apparently broke into the church located off Wickliffe Road using a crow bar to gain entry into the structure. According to the Clarke County Sheriff’s office, “Paint was spread around the floor, and masking tape was used to make some obviously inappropriate insignias on the wall. References to Hitler and racial slurs were written on the tape.”
There are no suspects at this point. Police have collected evidence from the scene and the investigation into the vandalism in ongoing.
Damages are estimated at around $600.00.
