State Police Respond to over 1,000 Accidents and Hundreds of Disabled Vehicles Across Va

Virginia State Police troopers and dispatchers have fielded more than 4,000 calls for service as Wednesday’s snowstorm moved across the Commonwealth. Statewide between 9 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 27, 2011), Virginia troopers responded to 1,006 traffic crashes and 835 disabled vehicles. The majority of the crashes involve damaged vehicles only. There have been no reported traffic fatalities resulting from storm conditions.

At approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday, Trooper S. R. Cox was knocked to the ground by an out-of-control vehicle on Interstate 66 in Northern Virginia. The trooper was pushing a vehicle off the road so as to clear the westbound lane when he was struck. Fortunately Trooper Cox was not injured and continued working through the night responding to calls and crashes.
