Storm Passes But Impact Continues

A major winter snow storm that exited  our area yesterday afternoon   has left Clarke County with 27″ blanket  of new snow. While the storm fell short of the thirty inch total that the area received in 1996, it still qualified as one of the largest ten storms on record for the area. Preliminary totals at Washington National Airport recorded 17.8″ placing  the the storm  as number 3 in winter totals on record.  Baltimore-Washington International  set a new all time record for a two-day snow event. Dulles Airport  recorded 32.5″ of new snow.

Allegheny Power reports that 988 customers  in Clarke County are still without power this morning as morning temperatures dip into the low teens. Temperatures tonight are forecast to dip into the single digits as Arctic air continues to pour in behind the  storm.

Travel conditions continue to be  difficult. VDOT reports primary roads as “moderate” with snow and ice throughout  Clarke County  while all secondary roads remain “severe.”
