It’s the last weekend of July and the summer is racing towards an end with the first day of school less than a month away. While it seems like it’s slipping away, there’s still time to enjoy more summer fun in Clarke County. We still have the annual “Pageant of Steam Show” and many other great things to enjoy this weekend. Here are a few events to help you squeeze some more fun out of your summer.
Friday July 27
Music in the Rose Hill Park presents “Matt Szechenyi and Cornelius Conway – Eclectic Guitar.” Music starts at 6:30 and runs through 8:00 PM.
The musical entertainment continues just just a stone’s throw away at the the Rotary Club of Clarke County stage at the Barns of Rose Hill with “Caravan of Thieves at Barns of Rose Hill” at 8:00 PM. Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. It’s theatrical and humorous. It’s musical and intense. It entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits of claps, snaps and sing-alongs.

Also Friday is the beginning of the annual “Pageant of Steam Show” held at the Ruritan Fairgrounds. This three day event brings together a huge collection antique and vintage machinery for exhibits, displays and a host of fun activities for enthusiasts and the general public. The fun begins Friday night with an “Antiques Only Tractor Pull” at 6:30 PM. Saturday, there is a consignment auction as well as a host of other activities including a Bluegrass concert by The Back Creek Valley Boys. There will also be daily activities for the entire family like, Kid’s Barrel Train Ride, an Old Time Blacksmith Shop, Flea Markets and Craft Vendors, and Sawmill and Threshing and Baling demonstrations.
Admission is $5, children under 12 are free. Friday July 27, Saturday July 28, & Sunday July 29.
Saturday July 28
Start your Saturday with a stroll through the Clarke County Farmer’s Market. It’s peak season for all manner of fruits and vegetables, so shop local and find the best Clarke County has to offer. Market runs from 8:00 AM through 12 noon in the municipal parking lot on South Church Street.
“St. Luke Baptist Church’s Senior Choir will host an Ice Cream Social” 11:00 AM. Find some treasures and enjoy a sweet treat as the volunteers at St. Luke’s host a Yard Sale and Ice Cream Social at St. Luke’s Baptist Church. There will also be a Yard Sale from 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM with tables available to rent and various Vendors selling items. Ice Cream Social- 11:00-2:00. “Joe Herrmann with special guests David McLaughlin & Marshall Milborn at Barns of Rose Hill” will perform at 7:00 PM on the Rotary Club of Clarke County stage. Joe Herrmann is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who has been making music for over 45 years. He is well-known in traditional music circles for his singing and playing. He co-founded The Critton Hollow String Band with his wife, Sam Herrmann, in 1975, and has toured internationally and recorded 8 albums. Joe is known for his patient and generous teaching.
