The Running of the Hogs

In Spain they may “run the bulls” but in Berryville we‘ve got the HOGS!

According to Wikipedia, Spanish lore says the origin of bull running began in Northeastern Spain during the early 14th century. While transporting cattle in order to sell at the market, men would attempt to speed the process by hurrying their cattle using tactics of fear and excitement. After years of this practice, the transportation and hurrying began to turn into a competition, as young adults would attempt to race in front of the bulls  and make it safely to their pens without being overtaken.

We’re not sure where our local hog chasing tradition may eventually lead but it’s a lot of fun to watch it in practice!

  1. laughter is good for the soul! What fun!

  2. Allowing this thing to go on is disgusting. It’s a form of animal cruelty. Many states are banning this type of behavior. Let’s wake up Clarke County Ruritans.

  3. Good times were had by all!

  4. I’m sure some of your customers are animal lovers, and realize the intelligence of pigs. Do you think they would continue to do business with you knowing you advocate the terrorizing of innocent animals? Let’s face it, that’s all it is, in order to amuse some people.

    • Captain Huggyface says:

Yeap if you look closely you can see the six year olds are carring knives and bats.
My son had a blast. He just wasn’t fast enough. I agree, bacon taste good!

Obviously some of the people here have never actually raised or had to take care of a pig. Let me share with you what they do for amusement….try to get in the pen to feed one, you get pushed all around and nudged into corners until they get you in the best possible position to start biting at your legs, then they chase you around until you leave the pen. Try to help one when it is injured or sick, they would happily tear off the arm you are trying to give them medicine with and to finally medicate them…well, yes, it looks like a pig scramble! You have no idea whether those pigs dislike doing the scramble or not, they may get a big ole kick out of having kids chase them. Puppies play chase with kids all of the time….
