Thunderstorms Tear Through Clarke
Route 7 westbound on Mt. Weather has one lane blocked by fallen tree.
At approximately 2:00 PM a line of powerful thunderstorms moved through Clarke County. These storms packed high winds and heavy rain. Downed trees have been reported throughout the area. A fallen tree has blocked one lane of traffic on Route 7 westbound at Mt Weather. A warning from the National Weather Service remains in effect through 3:30.

INDICATE A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN EXCESS OF 70 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED
ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM BALLENGER CREEK TO ASHBURN TO
DELAPLANE…MOVING EAST AT 45 MPH.

We were driving back from Charles Town in the middle of the storm–lightning on 340 wasn’t anything special, but very hard rain and very high winds. Apparently was a tree down on 340 near Berryville as well. We tried a couple different small roads off of 340 (Shepherd’s Mill Road and then Lewisville Road I think), but each had trees down in the road. Saw a good sized tree across the train tracks west of 340 as well (north of town). Someone told us that there was a tree down on Withers Larew as well, so we ended up going back up to Charles Town, then to Summit Point, and down to Rt 7 via Hardesty Road. That route works, or at least did around 3pm.
The most tree limbs we’ve seen down around here in several years. Might want to take along a chain saw if you’re traveling the back roads.
I had the high wind but not enough rain to wet the ground so it must have been spotty.
There are more limbs on the ground than i’ve seen in a while. Too bad we didn’t get much rain. Did anyone hear about the approach of this storm beforehand?

my heart is sick. my freezer has been with out electicity for almost 24 hours. not sure it will be on when I get home tonight. in checking the CDC web site (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/poweroutage/needtoknow.asp) some of my food should be thrown out…or maybe ya all could come up and we will have a big grill out!
