Traffic Alert: Expect Delays on Main Street Sunday Afternoon

Motorists in Berryville planning to use Route 7 Business from the railroad tracks to Route 7 Sunday afternoon should make their plans carefully. A  Dominion Virginia Power caravan will be transporting large transformers through town starting about 1;30 p.m. in route to the new substation located in Purcellville. Traffic delays on eastbound Route 7 may also be significant.

The operation will include two flat-bed trucks, each measuring more than 250 feet long, and eight bucket trucks. The equipment is scheduled to leave Berryville between 1:30 and 2 p.m. The caravan will follow the Rt. 7 to reach the west end of Purcellville around 6 p.m. VDOT representatives indicated in a public notice that the trip might take several hours longer.

VDOT representatives said that if traffic backups become significant, police would temporarily suspend the convoy and allow vehicles to pass.

According to Berryville Police Officer Adams, the 250-foot vehicles will back west along First street before then execute a left turn onto Main Street then proceed to route 7.

Additionally, there will be a traffic signal crew and  bucket truck crews needed to raise traffic lights along the route.

Each transformer weighs approximately 125 tons. The load measures approximately 19 feet high when on the truck, however, most traffic signals and overpasses along route 7 are only 17 feet in height.
